IOC President Says YOG Will Test New Olympic Events

IOC president Jacques Rogge tells Around the Rings whichever new discipline
from the YOG will join the Olympics is “the one million dollar question.”

“Let me tell you that injecting new disciplines would require most federations,
but not all, but most federations to remove an existing [discipline].”

Under Rogge’s tenure, the IOC has insisted on capping the number of athletes
at 10,500 and keeping the sports program contained at 310 events.

“So a federation presenting a new event must balance the quota.

“But there are events that are appealing. A couple of relays that I think are very
interesting, there is the issue of 3 on 3 [basketball], and also we’d love to give
a bit more fun in the sports presentation.”

A number of federations including judo, modern pentathlon, triathlon and others,
have introduced mixed team events, with athletes from different countries and
both genders forming one team at the YOG.

Rogge met with Youth Olympians and Ambassadors in Singapore. (ATR) He
also said other sports are proposing discipline changes such as hockey,
which is considering hockey sevens for the YOG.

Rogge gave notice to the IFs which may want to try something new at the
Olympics.

“If they want to try something at the high level, they have to do it here first.”

“We didn’t want to overload the competition at the beginning,” Rogge said of
this first YOG sport program.

“If I listen to all my dear colleagues on the international federations, we end up
with the Youth Games 5,000 athletes, I’m not kidding.”

With just one day of competition left in the inaugural YOG, Rogge says he’s
not completely happy, at least not yet.

“I will be completely happy when the last athlete has left the Olympic Village.
I say [the YOG] has exceeded my expectations. I knew it would be a good
organization from our Singaporean friends but they have exceeded their level
of perfection.

“My question mark was would there really be an embrace of the Culture and
Education Programme and there was. I mean this was a huge success, more
than we expected. I’m very, very happy with the satisfaction of my own
constituents, IOC members are totally supportive, NOCs, IFs.”

Rogge holds up an autographed t-shirt from Youth Ambassadors in Singapore.
(Singapore 2010)Rogge made the comments shortly after his session with
Young Olympians at the Youth Olympic Village Wednesday.

The 80-minute chat was comprised of pre-written questions and spontaneous
ones from the floor. Topics ranged from how to promote the YOG, to Rogge’s
formula for success, and a personal invitation to visit Rwanda.

“I’d love to” Rogge said.

“Next time we come to Africa I’ll consider passing by.”

Rogge told the Olympians “these Youth Olympic Games were a big success,
thanks to you. You made the success of the YOG.”

He stressed that the Olympians should not forget they are role models.

“All of you are the best in your age category. People look up to you.”

When asked if the YOG would continue once he leaves office in 2013, he said
the YOG is here to stay.

“Be sure that the Youth Olympic Games will survive me for eternity.”

Jacques Rogge praises triathlon relay

This article is presented without bias or favour and can be used, at no charge,
for editorial purposes.

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge (BEL) has described the
triathlon 4 x mixed team relay event as "exciting" - but refused to be drawn on its
chances of being included in future Olympic Games.

Rogge was at East Coast Park on Thursday to watch the super-sprint distance race, in
which two men and two women from each continent completed a 250m open-water
swim, 7km cycle ride and 1.7km run.

"I think it was exciting," he said of the event won by Europe 1. "Well organised, beautiful
setting and the athletes loved it. That's the most important thing. The athletes all had
smiles on their faces."

The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games is the first global multi-sport competition to
feature this new format and is seen by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) as an
important stepping stone in its attempt to have it incorporated into the summer Olympics.

"This is something we will have to discuss. We're going to analyse everything first,"
Mr Rogge said. "It's an exciting event - whether it will come to the traditional Games is
another question."

ITU president and IOC member Marisol Casado (ESP) said she was pleased with the
day's action and hoped it would help the event gain credibility.

"It was really a very good step for us because we had the opportunity to show the
programme to the people who decide," she said.

"We had a lot of IOC members on the stand and I think all of them were really happy
with the result.

"The decision must be made in 2013, so we are good on time to prepare everything
and that's why this event (Youth Olympic Games) was very important. I already talked
with the (IOC) president and the sports director and I think we are in a good way."

Ms Casado said the upcoming 2010 Team World Championships, starting on
22 August in Lausanne, Switzerland, would be another opportunity to give the event
exposure.

Catiil, Gonzales topped 1st TRiKing traihtlon

TRANSITION from the Olympic distance to long distance triathlon was hardly a problem
for Neil Catiil and Sandra Araullo-Gonzales as they ruled the 1st TriKing Long Distance
Triathlon held yesterday at the scenic Matabungkay Beach Resort and Hotel in
Lian, Batangas.

The 23-year old Cagayan de Oro native Catiil leaned on his strength in the bike to
pull away from his rivals led by reigning Philippine Half Ironman champion Celnan
Jopson and dominate the 2k swim, 60k bike and 15k run organized by Bike King with
TRAP officiating the event.

“Napabor sa akin itong ruta kasi may 5-kilometer na akyatin at dito ako malakas.
Pero medyo nangapa rin ako dahil ito ang unang karera ko sa bansa since December
sa Asian Duathlon at hindi rin masyadong nakapaghanda dahil lagi ang ulan sa
Cagayan de Oro,” said Catiil who timed in at three hours, 18 minutes and 51 seconds.

Jopson came in a far second at 3:27:09 in this race supported by PLDT SME
NATION, 100 Plus Drink as the official drink, MBRH and Philippine Star.

“This is his first long distance triathlon race but he was racing it like an Olympic
distance. He really is the future of Philippine triathlon,” said Jopson, the former Asian
Junior triathlon champion now owner of The Brick which is a one-stop triathlon shop.

Country’s top duathlete August Benedicto who is being supported by Paniqui
Mayor Miguel “Dors” C. Rivilla, placed third in 3:29:04.

A former two-time silver medalist of the Southeast Asian Games, Gonzales ran
a calculated race, conserving her energy for the run leg to upstage Doray Ellis in the
female elite of the event also supported by Summit Mineral Water, Polar Insulated Bottle,
ORBEA, CORRATEC,  KNOG and CORIMA.

“The last time I competed in an actual race was two years ago and I was really
nervous. I had a number of minor mistakes and at times didn’t know what to do. This is
a good experience as I can prepare myself better in future long distance events,” explained
Gonzales who clocked in at 3:56:12.

Ellis came in 3:59:37 while Joyette Jopson finished at third place in 4:08:32.

The three top finishers in the elite categories received medals from Bike King CEO
and TRAP director Raul Cuevas ably assisted by MBRH General Manager Rico Violeta.

Aside from elite class, action also took place also in the Age Group and Team
competition with the Philippine Triathlon Team made up of Epoy Jurolan, Mirasol Abad and
John Leerams Chicano beating Globe my Super Plan and Globe Super Duo squads.

Male age group  winners were Benjamin Rana (18-29), Philip Atento (30-39),
Mark Ellis (40-49), and Albino Alindogan (50 & over) while Jessica Silva (18-29) and
Laarni Pareds (30 & over) were crowned champions in the female age group.

Tirso De Luna received a special award for being the oldest finisher.

Age Groupers: Race alongside the world’s best
triathletes in 2010
31 March 2010

Aside from the opening race of the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship
Series in Sydney, all of this year’s events will feature mass-participation (age-group)
competitions in addition to the professional races. The age-group races in Seoul,
Madrid, Hamburg, London and Kitzbühel will give non-professional athletes the
opportunity to qualify for the ITU Triathlon Age Group World Championships, which will
be held in Budapest alongside the Dextro Energy ITU Triathlon World Championship
Grand Final. In 2009 over 19,000 age-group athletes took part in a Dextro Energy
Triathlon ITU World Championship Series event.

Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Seoul, May 8-9
With a population of over 10 million, Seoul will be the most populous city ever to host a
triathlon within the city itself. The Han River Park in the centre of the Yeoido Financial
Centre will act as race headquarters, providing age-group athletes sweeping views of
Seoul’s world-renowned architecture throughout the race. Athletes will complete two
750-metre swim laps before taking to the northern riverfront for the 40-km (two lap)
bike leg. After making their second transition, athletes will complete a 10-km, single-lap
run along the south shore of the Han River. For more on Seoul, click here

Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Madrid, June 5-6

Madrid’s unique course, set in beautiful Casa de Campo Park, is one of the most
challenging age-group courses on the circuit this year. After exiting the swim athletes
will set off on a four-loop bike ride around the park, featuring a 12% grade climb on
each loop. Once summiting the 400-metre long climb, the rest of each bike loop is
mostly downhill with a few gently rolling hills. The four-loop run course, also around
Casa de Campo Park, is mostly flat and finishes back at the lake. Sitting at almost
700 meters above sea level, Madrid’s climate is dry with very warm afternoons and
cool nights during summer. For more on Madrid, click here

Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Hamburg, July 17-18

Since its inaugural year in 2002 the Hamburg Triathlon has grown in size every year
Last year the race hosted 8,700 amateur triathletes, rivalling the London Triathlon as
the largest on Earth. Age-group athletes will have the option of participating in a Sprint
triathlon on Saturday or an Olympic-distance race on Sunday. Both races kick off with a
swim in the River Alster before taking to the city streets for the flat and fast bike leg. Age
groupers will wrap up the race with a completely flat run finishing in front of the historic
Hamburg Town Hall. For more on Hamburg, click here

Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship London, July 24-25

The fourth stop on this year’s World Championship Series tour will give amateur
athletes the opportunity to race on the same roads that the world’s best triathletes will
be tackling at the London Olympic Games in 2012. Hyde Park, one of the most beautiful
places in Central London, will serve as race central for both the elite and age-group
races. Amateur athletes competing in the sprint event will complete one swim lap
(750 meters), three bike loops (20km) and two run loops (5km). Participants in the
Olympic-distance race will complete double the number of laps over the very same
course (1,500 meters, 40km, 10km). For more on London, click here

Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Kitzbühel, August 14-15
Kitzbühel will be the smallest city to host a World Championship Series race in 2010,
but the famous Austrian ski resort offers perhaps the most unique course on the tour.
Age groupers will have the option of either a sprint-or Olympic-distance race, both of
which start with a swim in the warm, emerald-green waters of Schwarzsee Lake. Water
temperatures are expected to be around 22 degrees Celsius in August. The bike leg is
the gem of the Kitzbühel course, treating competitors to views of the Austrian Alps
throughout the 20-or 40-km ride. The bike course includes a number of short climbs
and one longer climb of approximately 1km. The run course features plenty of steep
climbs as athletes wind their way around Schwarzsee Lake.

Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Grand Final Budapest,
September 8-12

The final stop of the 2010 World Championship Series will offer age-group athletes the
opportunity to represent their country and race for the honour of being crowned a world
champion. Participants will start their day with a one-loop swim in a protected and calm
section of the Danube River, which runs straight through the heart of Downtown
Budapest. After making the first transition, athletes will take to the smooth and flat roads
of the Danube’s western shore for the bike portion of the race. The run will also take
place along the west side of the River, before taking athletes over the iconic Szechenyl
Chain Bridge for an extraordinary finish in front of the 745-year-old Buda Castle.

ITU President Becomes IOC Member
12 February 2010

On a historical day for ITU, the International Olympic Committee today elected ITU
President Marisol Casado as one of six new IOC Members at the 122nd IOC Session,
ahead of the Winter Olympic Games. Casado’s election to the IOC as a full member is
an honour for the entire triathlon family, further reinforcing ITU’s commitment to the
global development of the sport.

“I’d like to express my utmost gratitude to the athletes, coaches and national
federations who play a vital role in the development of the sport. I am very excited to
dedicate myself to the continued success of triathlon in the Olympic movement”

Marisol Casado,
ITU President & IOC Member

It is truly a great honour to be elected as an IOC Member. I would like to extend
gratitude to my new colleagues for their warmest support. I am also eternally grateful
to the entire triathlon family whom I have been working with more than 30 years. I’d like
to express my utmost gratitude to the athletes, coaches and national federations who
play a vital role in the development of the sport. I am very excited to dedicate myself to
the continued success of triathlon in the Olympic movement,” said Casado.

The election today comes after years of dedication and commitment to the sport from
Marisol on all levels. She was one of the founders of the Spanish Triathlon Federation
and intimately involved in the creation of ITU in Avignon in 1989. Casado served as
Secretary General of the Spanish Triathlon Federation (1989–1994 and 1997–2008),
concurrently acting as Treasurer of ITU (1992–1994 and 2000–2008). The ITU
president is a leading figure in the promotion of women in sport in Spain, serving as
President of Women and Sport Commission in the Spanish Olympic Committee
(1992-1994 and 2000 to present).

Having a federation president as an IOC member is seen to strengthen ITU’s
position in the Olympic family, and will further foster the global growth of the sport.

“I believe triathlon is a sport which promotes the Olympic ideals and a sport which
can address issues such as environmental awareness and a healthy lifestyle.
Triathlon is a young inspirational sport which links sport competition at its highest
level to a healthy balanced lifestyle for all participants of all abilities,” Casado continued.

2010 is another historical year for the sport, seeing sprint and team events added to
the Olympic programme at the Youth Olympic Games. The continued success of the
Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series and ITU Triathlon World Cup
Series, will also bring triathlon in its finest form to a rapidly growing global audience.

“The sport will see a significant milestone this summer at the first Youth Olympic
Games in Singapore, introducing sprint triathlon and 4x mixed team relay triathlon for
first time in the Olympic Games. Working closely together with my new colleagues, the
organising committee and our triathlon family, we will do our very best to contribute to
the successful inaugural event.

Global sport development as typified by ITU’s development projects has always been
our core activity, in keeping with the spirit of the IOC’s Olympic Solidarity programmes,
” the ITU President said
.

Cricket gets IOC approval, can bid to join Games
By Karolos Grohmann

VANCOUVER, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Cricket was cleared to pursue its bid to be included in
future Games after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) rubberstamped the
sport’s recognition on Thursday.

Cricket, powerboating and sports climbing became the latest sports to be officially
recognised by the IOC, a status necessary before launching a bid to become part of
the Olympic programme.

“The session gave definite recognition to the three federations,” IOC spokesman Mark
Adams told reporters.

The three sports can now bid to join the 2020 Olympics as the programme is always
determined seven years in advance.

Golf and rugby were latest inclusions in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games when an IOC
session voted them in last year.

The decision about new sports for the 2020 Games will be taken at the IOC session in
Buenos Aires in 2013 where the host country will also be picked.
