Kim Mangrobang Bags Bronze at Brasilia American Cup
Kim Mangrobang’s build up to defend her SEA Games Women’s Triathlon Gold Medal, which she won in Kuala Lumpur in 2017, got an encouraging boost by her winning a Bronze at the Brasilia CAMTRI Sprint Triathlon American Cup in the Brazilian capital last March 17.
She fell a little behind the lead duo of Luisa Baptista & Djenyfer Arnold, both of Brazil, Kim’s Coach, Portuguese Sergio Santos commented, “Kim did a good effort but she was swimming against the Brazilian open water champions.” Kim was also the only foreigner in an otherwise All-Brazilian field.
Our girl tried to organize a chase pack on the bike leg but could not match up with the strong riding BRA pair. Going into T2, Kim even fell to 4th against 3rd running Luma Guillen; but better transitions and a strong 5k split of 18:41 to Guillen’s 19 flat won 3rd place for Kim in 1:02:28. The Brazilian finished in 1:02:59.
Gold went to Baptista in 0:59:01 and silver to Arnold in 0:59:23.
Santos went on, “We go back to DESMOR in Portugal to build more fitness then race in Egypt at the end of March for the Pan Africa Championships, then Kim goes home to race in Subic.”
Kim remarked, “I want to defend my SEA Games Gold but also gain qualifying pints for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. I feel good and things are working out but more work needs to be done.”
Good job, Golden Girl!
